KAYAMBA AFRICA is a vocal based traditional and ethnic inclined six-member music group that strives to create a balance between traditional Africa music. Their main inspiration is South African Group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo who received international acclaim for their traditional African style. Their Director and lead vocalist is Timothy Juma Odemba, who is well-versed in poetry, drama and stage presentation. Their music is folksy depicting the social life of many Kenya traditions. The members come from different Kenya ethnic groups so they perform songs in at least 20 different Kenya languages including Luhya, Kikuyu, Kisii, Maasai, Kiswahili and Kalenjin.
Shortly after their formation, KAYAMBA AFRICA participated in the 1998 Malibu Star Search Competition emerging 2nd nationally. With a diverse musical background, KAYAMBA AFRICA was also voted as one of the best five groups at the Benga Beats Competition in 2001. After three years of studying their music and composing, they released their debut album Kayamba Africa after they were invited to perform at various concerts.
KAYAMBA AFRICA was one of the first Kenya groups to submit their video entry to the 2002 KORA all Africa Music Awards. Fortunately enough they were nominated for a KORA Award in the Best Traditional Category. Even though they did not win a LORA Award in 2002, they proved that their music has what it takes to get categorized with the best of the continent.
