Chaguo la Teeniez Awards is organized by the publishers of Insyder Magazine and has appeals mainly to the high school-going club. Groove Awards on the other hand is a gospel event that caters exclusivedly to the Christian Gospel music. It featured awards for various categories of music, dance and also has categories for regional artistes. Both the chaguo la Teeniez and Groove Awards were sponsored by Safaricom this year.
According to their website, Kalasha is the brainchild of the Kenya Film Commission, a government body that was constituted to spearhead growth in the film industry. This is a body that oversees and co-ordinates activities leading up to the gala event and beyond.
That said, I have always thought that kalasha awards were a government initiative to bring awareness towards Kenya’s movie industry by rewarding those involved in making this industry thrive? that said; the movies nominated do not reflect the actual reality of this industry. None of the movies proposed has sold a decent 50,000 copies on the street! Talk of double handedness.
The people behind the nominations completely chose to ignore (whether on purpose or out of sheer ignorance, i haven't a clue) Kenya’s movie industry factory; riverwood.
